Ammonium sulfate:Colorless crystals or white particles. Odorless. Decomposition above 280ºC.
Solubility in water: 70.6g at 0ºC, 103.8g at 100ºC.
CAS number :7783-20-2
Appearance and properties: Pure product is colorless rhombic crystal, industrial product is white to light yellow crystal.
Solubility: 70.6g at 0ºC, 75.4g at 20ºC, 78g at 30ºC, 81g at 40ºC.
Chemical property Colorless transparent rhombic crystal system, aqueous solution is acidic. Insoluble in alcohol, acetone and ammonia. It is hygroscopic and solidifies into a block after hygroscopic. When heated to 513ºC or above, it is completely decomposed into ammonia, nitrogen, sulfur dioxide and water. The reaction with alkalis releases ammonia gas. Reaction with barium chloride solution to form barium sulfate precipitation. Proteins can also be salted out.
USE: An excellent nitrogen fertilizer (commonly known as fertilizer powder), suitable for general soil and crops, can make branches and leaves grow strongly, fruit quality and yield, enhance crop resistance to disasters, can be used as base fertilizer, topdressing and seed fertilizer, but long-term use may lead to soil compaction. It can produce ammonium chloride by double decomposition reaction with salt, and ammonium alum by action with aluminum sulfate, and make refractory materials together with boric acid. Adding electroplating solution can increase electrical conductivity. It is also the catalyst of food sauce color, the nitrogen source of yeast culture in the production of fresh yeast, acid dye dyeing aid, leather deashing agent. In addition, it is also used in beer brewing, chemical reagents and battery production. Another important role is the mining of rare earth, mining with ammonium sulfate as raw materials, the use of ion exchange form to exchange the rare earth elements in the ore, and then collect the leaching solution simple filtration separation and drying into rare earth raw ore, about 5 tons of ammonium sulfate for each ton of rare earth raw ore mined and produced. There are also many biological uses, mostly used in protein purification process, because ammonium sulfate is an inert substance, not easy to react with other bioactive substances, in the purification process can protect protein activity, in addition, ammonium sulfate solubility is good, can form a high salt environment, for protein precipitation and subsequent high salt purification preparation. There is a big difference between the solubility of ammonium sulfate at zero and 25 degrees at room temperature. The following is the molar concentration of ammonium sulfate at different saturation at two temperatures.
